This added malware can destroy master boot record (MBR) resulting to program malfunction and system crashes. In some instances, it makes computer inoperable. It renders the PC unusable due to wiped hard drive. Thus, only remaining solution is to reformat the disc and re-install Windows.

Trojan:Win32/WipMBR.A may spread the infection to network-attached computers by making a copy of the Trojan on a server. Though, there were no reports that the threat also targets the main server. Its focus is on workstation and individual computers. It uses the Internet to deploy the code globally in the fastest possible way. To accomplish this, Trojan:Win32/WipMBR.A targets vulnerable web sites and runs a drop-by-download script on them.

It operates discreetly by creating a service named TRKSVR that solely rely on a system service LANMANWORKSTATION in order to load at Windows start-up. With the Trojan code appended to legitimate system service, there is a tendency that it may evade antivirus software detection particularly if it has an outdated database.

There is a certain degree that Trojan:Win32/WipMBR.A can run a copy of the code on shared network resources. It means to carry out the same infection on computers that are attached to affected network. On this situation, firewall and antivirus program setup on each station plays a big part in preventing the virus from spreading.
