Smart HDD was referred to as another bogus Windows hard disk optimization program. Sometimes tagged as Smart Repair virus, this software can be dropped and installed on the computer without user’s permission. On some instances, user installs it while disguising as a valid anti-virus program from online virus scanner web sites. Once inside the computer, Smart HDD will initiate a local PC Performance and Stability Analysis. It will produce fake results attempting to deceive users on the status of the local drive. A bunch of fake warnings will be produces as another scare tactics. This malware will declare critical errors and other false alert including the following pop-up messages:

Windows Disk Diagnostics
Windows detected a hard disk error.
A problem with the hard drive sectors has been detected. It is recommended to download the following certified software to fix the detected hard drive problems. Do you want to download recommended software?

Fix Disk
Windows Disk Diagnostics will scan the system to identify performance problems.
Start or Cancel

These are just some of the dozens of fake alerts being used by Smart HDD. Clicking on any of these signs will simulate a hard drive scan and state that problems are found. As you can see, it will try to make you believe that computer is experiencing troubles and a licensed version of the rogue application is required to fix it. In reverse, you must remove Smart HDD at once. Only a legitimate copy of anti-malware application can get rid of potentially unwanted program such as this one.

It will modify Windows Registry and add the following entries:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “(random characters)”
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “(random characters).exe”

The threat will drop the following malicious files:

%Temp%\(random characters).exe
%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temp\dfrg
%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temp\dfrgr

%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Smart HDD\Smart HDD.lnk
%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Smart HDD\Uninstall Smart HDD.lnk
